200 kilometres of nature and culture on the Ruhr!
The second preparation tour – the RuhrAroundChallenge (RAC) – starts on 26 May 2019 at 7 am at the MSV Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena. The approx. 200-km RAC was jointly developed with the ADFC and runs along the Ruhr and past the four lakes Baldeneysee, Kemnader See, Harkortsee and Hengsteysee. Breakfast will be served at the Wasserschloss Haus Kemnade. At the end of the Hengsteysee, there is a mountain stage up to the Ruins of Hohensyburg Castle which boasts impressive views of the Sauerland region (in good weather). Then the tour heads towards Dortmund; there is a tour around the Phoenix-See lake and lunch will be served at the BVB Signal-Iduna-Park-Stadium. Then it passes by Bochum the Talentwerk Bochum and then on the Erzbahntrasse and to the Schalke Veltins-Arena. Coffee & cake will be on offer at the Cafe del Sol. Next destination is the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zeche Zollverein and then along the first completed section of the Radschnellweg 1 (after completion of further sections between Dortmund and Duisburg this will be gradually integrated into the RAC) from Essen to Mülheim, the RAC finishes at the MSV Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena with dinner in Haus Seeblick. Riding at an average speed of around 18 km/h (plus two hours of breaks), the participants will reach the end destination at around 8 pm. The approx. 200-km route is almost completely paved and suitable for almost any bike. Racing bikes will take a slightly different route to avoid frequent bends and bumpy road sections as far as possible; for all other cyclists, experiencing nature and culture will be a major focal point. To minimise risks, the route will be exclusively on bike paths and small roads and wearing helmets is mandatory. There are a total of 5 service points along the route providing food, drinks, WCs and other services.
